Year of the Dragon: Chinese Astrology and Piercingly Good Luck

The new year is here, and according to the Chinese calendar, 2012 is the year of the dragon.  The Chinese New year is actually celebrated today, January 23rd, but because the Chinese calendar is different than the Western or Gregorian calendar, and goes by the cycle of the moon, the new year will begin on a different date each year.  Also, like in Western astrology, the Chinese separate their zodiac signs according to the elements.  Whereas American astrology indicates just four elements, common Chinese astrology goes according to five: earth, metal, water, wood, and fire.  In accordance with this revolving cycle, this year will be the year of the water dragon.

The dragon is the only mythological creature represented in the Chinese zodiac.  The other eleven signs are marked with actual existing animals: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.  But the dragon sign is special for more than just this reason.  Dragons are the ultimate symbol of luck, longevity, regality, and wisdom.  They are independent and intense, and in Chinese legend theyre the givers of good fortune and are said to be powerful and divine.  Those born under this sign are fearless and charismatic, and generally succeed at most things that they try.  Wearing the symbol of the dragon is an action meant to attract exactly this kind of fortune and confidence.

The 2012 year, in correlation with the dragon sign, will be one of a return to nature and traditional wisdom, as well as a cycle of new beginnings.  Its an auspicious time for changing the outward appearance to reflect the inner ideals, including changes to hair color, manner of dress, piercings, tattoos, and all other things physical.  With a major wave of change headed in our direction for the coming year, the best way to take advantage of the dragons luck is to roll with the tide instead of swimming against it.
